What is Reiki?

Reiki is an energy healing treatment that works holistically on the whole body, mind and spirit. It is not a system of religious beliefs, it is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy. Simply put, Reiki is a relaxing treatment whereas natural healing vibrations are transmitted through the hands of a Reiki practitioner (acting as a conduit) to the body of the recipient. The purpose of a Reiki treatment is to relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, release emotional blockages, accelerate natural healing, balance subtle bodies energies and support other medical modalities including traditional therapies.

When the flow of the "Life Force Energy" is disrupted, weakened or blocked, emotional or health problems tend to occur. Imbalances can be caused from many situations occurring in our lives, such as: emotional or physical trauma, injury, negative thoughts and feelings, including fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, negative self-talk, toxicity, nutritional depletion, destructive lifestyle and relationships, neglect of self and lack of love for oneself or others, from emotions that are not expressed in a healthy way.

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.

History of Reiki

Reiki is believed to have been associated with Mikao Usui who is credited with rediscovering the root system now called Reiki. His tradition and methods were passed through several grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki takes many forms, however, The Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced. Practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through an initiation process where Masters pass on their knowledge and expertise to their students.

Description of a Typical Session

A typical session with me is approximately 60 minutes long. I will begin by describing the session to you and I will give you an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues you are experiencing. We will also go over what you are hoping to achieve from the session. For the actual session, you will rest comfortably on a massage table on your back with your shoes removed. Reiki can be performed with you sitting comfortably in a chair as well. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and you will always be fully clothed. I recommend you wear loose, comfortable clothing. A session will be a mix of hands-on, where I will apply a light touch during the session, and hands-off where I will hold my hands slightly above your body. If you prefer not to be touched you can indicate this to me before we begin.

The session will then proceed with me moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions. There are a variety of responses that your body may have during a session. You might feel a warming or coldness in certain areas, tingling sensations, or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. Overall, the session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.
